How does Fraxel work?
Fraxel fractional lasers use tiny beams of light to cause micro-injuries to the skin. This eliminates the outer layer of skin cells, where many pigmentation issues are found, and also triggers the skin’s natural healing mechanisms including the release of collagen.
Fraxel is a dual-laser system, which means it uses two different wavelengths to address a variety of skin issues. The 1550 laser, which penetrates deeper into the skin, is great for treating wrinkles, acne scarring, or other scars. The 1927 laser is more superficial, and can be used to improve skin tone and texture, along with other signs of aging.1
Unlike some skin resurfacing treatments, Fraxel DUAL and Fraxel RE:STORE are non-ablative laser systems. This non-ablative laser technology means that treatment is more comfortable and has fewer side effects, and the healing process is much faster.2
What to expect
Preparing for treatment
The first step in Fraxel laser treatment is a consultation with one of our experienced practitioners. During this meeting, you will have the opportunity to discuss your complexion frustrations and goals, and can also inform us about your skincare and make-up routine along with any medications you take. Before treatment, you should carefully apply sunscreen and avoid sun exposure to the treatment area for a few weeks.
Resurfacing procedure
Before treatment with Fraxel DUAL or Fraxel RE:STORE, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and you will be treated with a topical anesthetic to help you stay comfortable. Treatment takes between 10 and 30 minutes, and most of our patients report that the only thing they feel is a sensation of warmth at the treatment area.
Recovery
After Fraxel treatment, no downtime is necessary. It is typical to experience some redness and swelling at the treatment area. This should resolve within a few days. As the skin’s healing process is initiated, you’ll notice that it looks and feels as though the treated area has a sunburn. Once the dead skin flakes off, you’ll begin to notice smoother, more youthful, healthy skin.
Results
Results of Fraxel skin resurfacing are immediate, and continue to improve over the 2 to 3 months following treatment as new collagen production increases.
