What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable, wrinkle-reducing treatment made of a purified protein called botulinum toxin type a. Botox is made by Allergan, a leading pharmaceutical company. Other botulinum toxin products or neurotoxin wrinkle reducers include Dysport® and Xeomin®. In addition to the many cosmetic purposes it serves, Botox can also be used to treat medical conditions such as blepharospasm (uncontrollable eye twitching), hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), overactive bladder, chronic migraines, strabismus, and cervical dystonia (neck pain).1
How does Botox work?
The wrinkles and fine lines that bother you so much are the results of muscle movement. Your brain sends signals to your facial muscles telling them to twitch. This is no problem in the short-term. But over the course of your life, an incalculable number of muscle contractions add up, eventually result in creases and wrinkles.
Botox works at the muscular level in a very simple way: it prevents your muscles from receiving the signals your brain sends. When the muscles don’t receive the signals, they don’t twitch, and when they don’t twitch, wrinkles don’t form. Over time, your muscles and skin will relax and smooth out, eliminating the fine lines and creases that can make you appear aged and fatigued.

Preparing for Botox
Injection of botox is a very simple procedure and little-to-no preparation is required of you. It can be helpful to avoid alcohol or medication such as blood-thinners or ibuprofen in the days before your appointment in order to minimize the chance of bruising.
Your Botox treatment
At the beginning of your appointment we will discuss your aesthetic goals and your treatment plan. We will cleanse the area to be treated and carefully inject your Botox.
Recovery after Botox
No downtime is needed after Botox treatment and most people resume regular activities right away. You may experience some mild swelling, bruising or redness at the injection site.

Am I a candidate for Botox?
At APS, we use Botox to treat individuals between the ages of 18 and 65 who suffer from wrinkles, fine lines and facial folds. Good candidates are healthy, both physically and mentally, and have realistic expectations for their results based on their confidential consultation with our team of board certified plastic surgeons.
Why shouldn’t I have Botox?
You should not have Botox if you are pregnant, or breastfeeding, have certain neurologic conditions, or have had an allergic reaction to previous injections of botulinum toxin. Your provider will review the Botox prescribing information with you to ensure you are a good candidate for Botox.
What is the right age to get Botox?
The average age of our Botox clients is 40 to 50, but there is no right age. We also have clients in their 20’s who visit us for “baby botox” or preventative Botox.
Where will my Botox treatment take place?
All of our cosmetic procedures are performed at our state-of-the-art outpatient medical centers in New Jersey. How long will my Botox results last?
Botox results typically are noticeable one week after treatment and last 3 to 4 months. Botox results aren’t permanent; most last a few months, though the precise duration of your results is impossible to predict and will depend on your body’s unique chemistry. Once the results wear off, you can return to our office for another procedure. Over time, your body will acclimate to the treatment and will not respond in the same way and we will adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
Can I combine Botox with other cosmetic treatments?
Yes, many patients combine their Botox treatments with injectable dermal fillers, lip enhancement, or other non-invasive treatments.
What are the potential side effects of Botox?
Serious side effects from Botox are very rare. The most common side effects are temporary bruising, swelling or redness. In rare cases, patients may experience ptosis (temporary drooping eyelids), an upset stomach, or flu-like symptoms.3
