Procedures to remove or diminish upper lip wrinkles

No matter how accepting we are of the aging process, there are some wrinkles on the face we would prefer to live without. One of these wrinkles is the perioral wrinkles, which are the fine or deep lines that occur around the mouth and lips.

These wrinkles are caused by everyday activities such as eating and talking, but they can also be a result of genetics and are exacerbated by smoking and sun exposure. Fortunately, there are several treatment options available to help diminish or, in some cases, eliminate the wrinkles.

“As these wrinkles progress further over time, individuals begin to look older than they really are,” said Dr. Elliot Heller, a plastic surgeon in Staten Island.

Depending on your skin goals, your plastic surgeon will assist you in deciding on a treatment plan that will best suit your needs. Because every patient is unique, the best option for you will be determined during your one-on-one consultation.

Treatment options include:

  • • Laser Resurfacing. A CO2 laser beam is used to vaporize the damaged skin calls caused by sun damage, blemishes and wrinkles. There are two types of lasers that can be used, ablative and nonablative. Nonablative lasers address the dermis of the skin while keeping it intact, while ablative removes the outer layers of the skin.
  • • Chemical Peels. Chemical peels remove the outer layers of the damaged skin to promote the growth of new cells. Several types of chemicals can be used, but it is up to your plastic surgeon as to which one will work best based on the severity of your wrinkles.
  • • Fillers and Injectables. Injectables and fillers are placed under the skin to add volume to the lips to give them a smoother appearance. There are various types of materials that can be used including Botox, collagen, silicone, Restylane and even purified fat.

“The treatment for lip wrinkles can be long-term or permanent with resurfacing, while most fillers, except for silicone, are a temporary solution that require annual treatments for maintenance,” said Dr. the facial plastic surgeon who offers eyelid surgery. “No matter which procedure you choose, you will have excellent results that will make your lips appear youthful and smooth.”
