Body lift surgery

Since the popularity of gastric bypass surgery has increased dramatically over the last 20 years, we have seen many patients from New Jersey with extra skin on their arms, thighs, and midsection. The extra hanging skin is a result of massive weight loss after a lap band is placed, gastric bypass surgery, or significant dieting.

The weight loss after bariatric surgery usually ranges from 40 to 140 pounds. Some massive weight loss patients are very fortunate after surgery, in that the remaining skin tightens up on its own. Unfortunately, there are many patients with skin that has lost its elasticity and it continues to hang. Having the extra skin after significant weight loss is not only a cosmetic problem, but can also be quite uncomfortable because it can rub against other skin or clothing, causing irritation.

A body lift is a cosmetic surgery that remove excess fat deposits and loose hanging folds of skin.1

Procedures

years. They can help enhance the results achieved through a body lift. During your initial consultation, you can discuss your areas of concern with your surgeon, and you’ll be provided with customized treatment options designed to reach your goals.

Arm lift (brachioplasty)

When liposuction is not enough to improve sagging arms, a surgical procedure is carried out in which an incision is made under the arm to remove excess skin. The result is a tighter, thinner arm.

Thigh lift

Sometimes Smartlipo can be performed to tighten a small amount of excess skin. But if the excess skin is significant, incisions can be made in creases under the buttocks or inner thighs to remove extra skin and tighten the whole area.

Lower body lift

Lower body lift surgery, referred to as a belt lipectomy, combines abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) with thighplasty (thigh lift). A lower body lift is ideal for those who have lost a significant amount of weight and have excess fat and loose skin in the lower back, abdominal area, and lower extremities.

Body lift

After bariatric surgery, excess skin can certainly accumulate around the abdomen. An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, can make a dramatic improvement. However, the extra skin can sometimes go all the way around to the back.

A body lift utilizes a circumferential incision that extends around the abdomen and back, hidden below the underwear line. The excess skin is removed, leaving a much smoother abdomen and back.

Recovery & Results

Each of these surgeries can be performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia in an operating room at our accredited surgery center.

The recovery lasts about two weeks due to swelling and bruising.

You will wear a compression garment during this time to help your body mold to its new contours. Body lift patients need to be realistic. Removing every bit of excess skin may not be possible, but the result will be dramatic and well worth the effort.

FAQs

Am I a good candidate for body lift surgery?

In addition to requiring surgery to counter the effects of massive weight loss, ideal candidates for a body lift have realistic expectations and are:

At a stable weight
Have no significant medical issues
Unable to achieve results via dieting and exercise
In good health, both physically and emotionally
Prepared for surgery and its recovery period
Willing to follow postoperative instructions
Are a non-smoker or willing to quit at least 30 days before surgery

Does body lift surgery hurt?

You can expect to experience mild to moderate pain and discomfort during the recovery period following body lift surgery. Our surgeons will provide detailed post-operative instructions, which along with medication, will aid healing and ensure your maximum comfort during the healing process.2

Does body lift surgery have any risks?

When performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, body lift surgery is considered a safe and effective body contouring procedure. However, like any surgery, body lift surgery does have some risk of complications such as anesthesia risks, bleeding, blood clots, asymmetries, infection, changes in skin sensation, swelling, and poor wound healing.3

Can I combine any other procedures with body lift surgery?

Yes, many patients choose to do a breast lift at the same time as their body lift surgery, or as part of an upper body lift.
